2014-’15 SAFETY/ RISK MANAGEMENT CLINIC
As instructors and employees of Roundtop Mountain Resort the safety of our guests and our selves is paramount. As skiing professional’s physical preparation, mental preparation and equipment maintenance are the cornerstones of having a successful season. Making sure we work with our guests in the safest way possible to enhance their time with us and keep them returning is paramount. Remember Safety, Fun, and Learning!
General Personal Guidelines
Equipment maintenance; for skiers include release checks (yes, 5 lbs can make a difference), boot fit and condition (worn heels and toe plates), binding function and accessories (glasses, goggles, helmets, gloves, etc.). Helmets have a short life, if older than 5 years old think about replacing. Or if you have taken a hard fall and your helmet contacted the snow, tree, etc., think about replacing. Be aware of changes around the mountain Read, read, read… Watch training DVD’s and the occasional Warren Miller flick. When free-skiing, be aware of guests and those you are skiing with and always ski in controlResponsibility Code -This must be a part of all Lessons
- Always stay in control
- People ahead of you have the right of way.
- Stop in a safe place for you and others.
- Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.
- Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
- Observe signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails.
- Know how to use lifts safely.
General Personal Guidelines Handling high traffic areas ie. THE DISCOVERY AREA
- Stopping locations - See and be seen!
- Lift loading, riding and unloading
- Arrange passengers prior to getting in line (size, number of chairs, etc.)
- When unloading chair, be aware of where your skis/board are in relations to your student’s
- Snow conditions
- When skiing with a class or on a clinic, group members should always stop BELOW the group
- Students under 18 must have a parent sign a waiver in order to take a park lesson.
- For all lessons in the park, both instructor and student(s) must wear helmets
Accident Management
- Do not move the person or REMOVE EQUIPMENT
- Comfort the injured person
- Send the strongest slider (preferably 2, and give specific instructions as to where you are on the hill) for help
- Look for others to assist
- Keep class together and off to the side of the trail until Patrol arrives and releases you
- Get names and phone numbers of students and other witnesses
- Carry a small note pad and pencil.
- Advise supervisor
- Stop at Patrol after lesson and complete forms as required
- DO NOT SAY OR DO ANYTHING STUPID!
Child Considerations
- Be familiar with the RMR LOST CHILD PLOICY
- Lift use with smaller children
- Ask lift op for assistance (stop or slow down lift)
- Size and ability of class
- Use Instructor Assistant if more than 1 chair is needed for class
